Paranoia and the Unexpected

One of the worst ways to spend a vacation is worrying about all the things that can go wrong. So before we left for Thailand, we spent time pouring over books, trying to know as much as possible about the culture so that we wouldn't be shocked or taken advantage of during the trip. But as wonderful as travel guides can be, they are no replacement for the "A-Hah" moments which come from the unexpected. Here's a bunch of "A-Hahs" We knew about the dogs in Bangkok…but nothing prepared Maura for the mangy mutts being permitted to poop where-ever when-ever how-ever they want to. She learned to appreciate this doggie dump scene the first day when Erik told her, "Watch out!" right before she stepped in it. Her brand new shoes thanked her for the opportunity to get to know Thailand firsthand…or should we say, firstfoot?
